Before Bhopal was Bhopal, this hilly stretch of central India was Gond country — a tribal kingdom whose forests, lakes and oral epics outlasted empires.

Its final flame was Rani Kamlapati, the last queen of the Gonds in Bhopal. Cornered by treachery and the rising power of Dost Mohammad Khan, she chose the lake over surrender. Her palace, half-submerged, still mirrors itself in the Upper Lake at dusk.

Dost Mohammad Khan, an Afghan general, founded the princely state of Bhopal in the chaos following Aurangzeb's death. For over a century, his lineage ruled — building forts, mosques and the first true urban form of Bhopal.

It was a city of mosques and music, kebabs and kothas, Persian poets and Pashtun warriors — and a quiet preparation for what would come next: a hundred years of female rule.

For 107 years — extraordinary in the entire history of South Asia — Bhopal was ruled by women.

Qudsia, Sikander, Shah Jahan and Sultan Jahan: four Begums who built mosques and railways, founded schools for girls, played cricket, edited journals and abolished slavery long before much of the world.

Begum 1

Qudsia Begum

Ruled 1819 – 1837

The first. Widowed at eighteen, she defied the court and crowned herself regent. She built Gohar Mahal, learned Persian and Arabic, and set the precedent that would shape four generations.

Begum 2

Sikander Begum

Ruled 1844 – 1868

Soldier-queen. She rode horses, drilled troops in person, performed the Hajj as a reigning monarch — and built Moti Masjid as a Bhopali answer to Delhi's pearl mosque.

Shah Jahan Begum

Ruled 1868 – 1901

Builder of Taj-ul-Masajid — one of Asia's largest mosques — and Taj Mahal Palace in Bhopal. A poet who wrote in Persian and Urdu and gave the city its grandest skyline.

Begum 4

Sultan Jahan Begum

Ruled 1901 – 1926

Reformer. She founded girls' schools, served as Aligarh Muslim University's first woman chancellor, abolished slavery and modernised health-care — then voluntarily abdicated in favour of her son.

On the night of December 2, 1984, a leak at the Union Carbide pesticide plant released methyl isocyanate over Bhopal. Thousands died in their sleep. Tens of thousands more carry the wound to this day.

It remains the world's worst industrial disaster — and the city's grief, anger and refusal to be forgotten shape it still.

Out of tragedy, a renewal: tree-lined boulevards, a new metro, the Bharat Bhavan arts complex, and a generation that holds the city's old languages with new technology.

Bhopal today is two cities at once — the medieval old town of mosques and bazaars, and the lakeside new town of cafés and start-ups — separated by water, joined by memory.

Mosques and Shiva temples, Sufi dargahs and gurudwaras — Bhopal's neighbourhoods have, for centuries, held their differences as friendships.

It is a city where Eid sweets are sent to Hindu homes, where Holi colours stain Muslim courtyards, and where the lake belongs to all.
