Before Bhopal was Bhopal, this hilly stretch of central India was Gond country — a tribal kingdom whose forests, lakes and oral epics outlasted empires.
Its final flame was Rani Kamlapati, the last queen of the Gonds in Bhopal. Cornered by treachery and the rising power of Dost Mohammad Khan, she chose the lake over surrender. Her palace, half-submerged, still mirrors itself in the Upper Lake at dusk.
