Chowk Bazaar
Mughlai kitchens, sweet shops and paan counters
Walled city, near Jama Masjid
Chowk is the old commercial core of Bhopal, laid out in the Begum era and still full of silver, zardozi and spice shops. Food here is woven into the shopping: a plate of nihari for breakfast, malpua in the afternoon, paan on the way out.
Unlike Chatori Gali, Chowk works best in daylight, when you can pair eating with the bazaar, the Jama Masjid courtyard and the narrow lanes around it.
Best time
Morning for nihari and poha; late afternoon for sweets and paan.
Budget
₹100–300 per person.
What to eat here
Nihari with tandoori roti
Overnight-simmered stew, served roughly 6–9am.
Bhopali rezala
Pale, cardamom-scented mutton curry from Begum-era kitchens.
Malpua & shahi tukda
Syrup-heavy sweets sold year-round.
Saada or meetha paan
The traditional close to a heavy Mughlai meal.
Local tips
- Combine the food with silver and zardozi shopping in the same lanes.
- Fridays around prayer time are crowded — plan around them.
- Wear shoes you can slip off if you step into the Jama Masjid.
